About

'Scrounge Art is the work of Carly Brett, I have been a practicing artist for over 9 years in Newcastle having held numerous solo and group exhibitions in Newcastle, Sydney, Port Macquarie and Byron Bay and am currently represented by Forsight Gallery in Newcastle.

I began painting and creating from a very young age and studied Fine Art at the University of Newcastle. After university, along with a handful of talented friends, I became director of one of Newcastle’s most prominent artist-run galleries, Field Contemporary Art Space. The gallery consisted of 4 exhibition spaces, studio spaces for the gallery staff and also facilities for artist residencies. Field had many memorable and experimental exhibitions and sadly had to shut it doors in 2008.

Over the years I continued to have regular exhibitions and undertook commissions from local buyers. In 2010 I was hired by Newcastle City Council to paint a mural in Newcastle's main street, Hunter St. It was a huge 5 panelled painting that consisted of abstract creatures, flowers and field like imagery. The building burnt down but like a phoenix rising from the ashes out came my newest project 'Scrounge art'.

After studying small business management I began designing unique retro brooches using recycled items and began selling them at the markets, after lots of trial and error and a strong following I expanded my jewellery line to include earrings and necklaces, stocking in local boutiques and art galleries.
